Description

Souvenir medal from the world's fair held in Paris, featuring a number of symbolic images. On one side, there is a woman seated beneath a tree, holding out a laurel crown to a man at left; at the bottom is an image of the exposition space with the Eiffel Tower. Text around the image says "Exposition Universelle" around the edge and the year, 1889, near the center. The other side has an angel blowing a trumpet in a tree, below a star, with her arm around the bust of a person wearing laurels (at right). Text at left says "Republicque … continued below

T. V. Munson Collection

Thomas Volney Munson (September 26, 1853 - January 21, 1913), a renowned grape horticulturist is most well known for his contributions to the field of horticulture and rootstock development. His grape research and collection of native Texas rootstock were the impetus in saving the French wine industry. The French government bestowed on Munson, the Chevalier du Merite Agricole (The French Legion of Honor) for his contribution in saving the French wine industry.
