More and more, transporta-
tion of gasoline is being
handled through pipe lines.
Because the lines rust on
the inside, corrosion tends to
shorten their life and often
causes costly breaks. Also, small
particles of rust flake off and are

SCRAPING SAFETY valves and painting on a coat of Hum-
ble Rust-Ban are C. E. Fullen, left, and W. E. Huggins, both
painters. The safety valves, from RuR SR-10, will finally be
painted with red enamel. The Rust-Ban protects the valves
against rust and forms a good base for the red enamel which
not only helps protect them against the weather, but also adds
considerably to the good housekeeping and attractiveness of
the unit where they will be installed.

moved through the line only once

rust, estimated to be less than a
teaspoonful.
CONSIDERATION is being
given to the use of such inhibitors
within the Refinery to afford rust
protection to all handling facili-
ties, such as storage tanks. Protec-
tion would also be afforded to all
subsequent transportation and
handling facilities such as tank
cars, barges, tankers, bulk storage,
pumps, service station tanks and
equipment, and customer’s cars.

which had been previously used
for some years by another com-
pany, was put into service from
Hearne to Austin and San Antonio
to transport Humble products to
these locations. These lines have
been used for motor gasolines and
aviation gasolines for the Air
Force.
During the first several months
of operation, gasoline pumped
through the lines, particularly the
old line, picked up the rust. To
remove the rust, large filters made
of felt were installed at the San
Antonio terminal and it was neces-
sary to clean them almost every fl-
hour period, so great was the
quantity of rust removed from the
inside of the line. Furthermore,
pipe line scrapers were moved
through the line twice a week.
TO COMBAT this rust, a co-
operative test program was initia-
ted through the efforts of the Hum-
ble Pipe Line, Sales department,
and Humble Inspection Labora-
tory with approval of the Air
Force to use a commercial inhibi-
tor in the aviation gasoline which
it purchased. The inhibitor does
not harm the gasoline. This actual
demonstration has shown that the
inhibitor will practically eliminate
the formation of rust inside the
pipe lines. Consequently, it is no
longer necessary to use felt filters
at the discharge end of the line.
Today, only 100 mesh copper
screens, as required by Air Force
regulations, are being used. Pipe
line scrapers, which are now

“sample,” it was impractical to
prepare it in the laboratories and
pilot units ordinarily used. So for
the first time, a big sample batch
of lube oil is being produced by
practically turning three plant
units into a big laboratory pilot
unit.
TO PRODUCE this Texan-
size sample, processing schedules
on the three lube plants at Bay-
town were planned through the
usual fine cooperation and team-
work of Operating personnel, Lab-
84 Motors Will Get
Lightning Protection
Protective equipment will be
installed on eighty-four 2300-volt
motors. This type of protective
equipment has been previously in-
stalled on 137 motors. The 84 new
installations will complete the
lightning protection program on
2300-volt motors within the Re-
finery.
These motors are among the
largest in the Refinery and are
subject to direct lightning strokes.
The arresters will eliminate near-
ly all damage due to lightning.
