Built in 1854, the Homestead was home to one of the founding families of Dripping Springs near Austin. Occupied by the Pound family until 1983, it was the first school house, church, and medical office. The reconstructed home and its decorative artifacts represent life in Central Texas around the year 1910.

Notes

Text: “Did you get the package sent you before […]? [Sil]ver City, New Mex. Dec. 31, 1916. My Dear Mother Dear, I have been thinking I would write and thank you for that lovely Christmas package. I certainly did appreciate it. You did not say any thing about those handkerchiefs with B on them but I knew they were for Byrdie. She was so proud of them. She said they were so dainty and pretty and those four with M on them were lovely. Pretty and I decided for each of us to have two of them. They were so pretty. And that combination suit was lovely. I am going to save it until next summer. That package was so “Christmasy”. All tied up with the ribbon and pretty seals. Mr. Stewart said when I went to the door you are the one that got the pretty package to-day. I would have written sooner but we just got moved to our tent house Friday. We have been so busy getting everything unpacked I just have not taken time to write. Byrdie seems to be tired yet. She does not seem to have gotten over the trip yet. She can not walk very much yet on account of the altitude. But I think she will get accustomed [sic] to it later on. I can not write much more as it is getting so late. I will write to you more _next year_. The snow has not melted much yet. We enjoyed one of those beautiful candles last night a while also the beautiful _Xmas bell_. B likes the new tent house. The sun has shone all day to-day. It has been like spring. B has sat in sunshine all day, good by mother until next year, Love Marguerite. A prosperous and happy new year all of us. Silver City New Mexico. Jan. 1, 1917. My Dearest Mother Dear, Well how are you this bright New Year’s morning? It is a beautiful day. I have made many good resolutions and am going to do my best to carry them out. Byrdie is feeling a little better this morning. I suppose I will be writing all the year as I am beginning this letter before breakfast. I am going to write to Elizabeth today too. Mother Dear I do not think I will have to take the 1/2 year science for my Diploma [sic]. Just Pedagogy what had I better take up in College work. Write to me real soon and let me know. So I will be ready for 2nd Semester. Love from all & a bushel from me, Marguerite."
