NEW DRUG USED TO ALLEVIATE
ILL EFFECTS OF ARTHRITIS
PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 21. (UP) j
—Discovery of a new drug, called
artisone, for alleviating the pain
and swelling in arthritis, was an- ]
nounced at the regional meeting of
the American College of Physi-
cians.
The drug has been used success-
fully in treating patients suffering
from mild and severe rheumatoid
arthritis. It was ineffective in very
advanced cases.
The importance of the new drug,
its discoverers said, is that it can be j
made available eventually in quan- j
tity and at moderate cost.' It is not |
toxic. 1
They predicted artisone would be
the forerunner of a group oLnew
synthetic hormone-like substances
which it is hoped will be valuable
in the treatment of degenerative
diseases of the aging. Already,
several other derivatives have been
synthesized and will be tested
clinically.
Announcement of the new com-
pound was made by Drs. Donald
R. Fitch and Peter J. Warter, of.
Hanncman Hospital, and Dr.
Joseph Seifter, director of v the
Wyeth institute of Applied BiiSt
chemistry.
Seifter stressed the fact that
artisone is not a cure or preven-
tative for arthritis. Indications are
that patients must continue taking
the drug, with “rest periods” be-
tween series of doses,* to benefit
