Portion Size Guidelines
How Many Servings A Day?
The Food Guide Pyramid
recommends that servings from the
meat, poultry, fish, dry beans, eggs
and nuts group be limited to about
two to three servings per day, or the
equivalent to five to seven ounces.
What Counts as a Serving?
A serving is defined as two to three
ounces of cooked lean meat, poultry
or fish. Estimate about four ounces
of boneless, trimmed and skinless
raw to get three ounces of cooked
meat, fish or poultry. One-half cup
of cooked dry beans, one egg or two
tablespoons of peanut butter count as
one ounce of lean meat.
The Three-Ounce Rules of Thumb
•A three-ounce cooked serving is
about the same size as a deck of cards.
*A three-ounce cooked serving is
about the size of an average women’s
palm. It may be helpful for you to
weigh a three-ounce serving, and do
a side-by-side comparison to judge
it size as a future reference.
•Imagine your dinner plate
divided into three sections. A three-
ounce serving of meat, poultry, or fish
should account for just 1/3 of the
plate. Another 1/3 should contain
starches, like potatoes or rice, and the
other 1 /3 should contain vegetables.
•One half of a cooked, boneless,
skinless whole chicken breast if about
three ounces. A three-ounce serving
of chicken is also equal to:
2 thighs, 2 drumsticks, 1 drumstick
In baseball, pitcher
Nolan Ryan holds the
all-time records for
strikeouts (5,714),
walks (2,795) and no-
hitters (7).
