The sight of young men and women chipping away the Berlin Wall in that memorable autumn of
1989 was only the most dramatic instance of people removing barriers that separate them. Over
the past several decades, the world's trade barriers also have gradually fallen due, in part, to
the advent of routine international air travel, high-speed communications, global transfer of
capital and heightened competitiveness.4f
