Notes

1970s evening dress by Hanae Mori, exhibition text read: As the only Asian couturière in the history of French haute couture, Hanae Mori deftly translated her success as a fashion designer in Japan to the world of elite Western fashion. When she opened her fashion house in Paris in 1977, she brought over three decades of experience in impeccable dressmaking skills, tailoring techniques, and fabric design. Balancing herself between these two fashion systems and cultures, Madame Mori combined gently shaped silhouettes with delicate chiffon featuring traditional Japanese iconography – here Mount Fuji and cherry blossoms. The wide, uninterrupted panels of fabric draw from the kimono’s construction, where uncut panels are draped over the shoulders and arms to embrace the flatness of the two-dimensional fabric.
Hanae Mori’s designs often feature innovative prints, which begin as her original paintings on canvas that are then translated to hand-painted and printed fabrics. The red blocks on this garment include vertical kanji characters that spell out Madame Mori’s name. Signing the print this way draws from the Japanese tradition of stamping prints with artists signatures, connecting her textile design to a longer history of artistic production.
