Notes

1960s uchikake, exhibition label read: Uchikake, or outer kimono with thick padded hems, were originally part of Japanese court traditions which were open only to elite people. As Japanese garments fell out of fashion with the influx of Western-style clothing in the late nineteenth century, uchikake and kimonos were worn less frequently and became important parts of ceremonies like weddings. Today, Japanese brides wear uchikake during part of elaborate celebrations, citing their importance as distinctly Japanese and “traditional,” though they did not become part of regular wedding attire until the late 1960s. As a garment worn for ceremonial purposes, many aspects of this uchikake’s design are important both aesthetically and symbolically. While in Japan white has been traditionally associated with birth and death – a clean slate for a new period in life – wedding attire includes the color to signify the bride’s detachment from her household and that she is being “dyed” into her husband’s house. Red often symbolizes beauty and love, and the lining on this uchikake recalls the former tradition of women wearing red undergarments.
