Notes

1970s dress by Karl Lagerfeld for Chloe, exhibition text read: While Karl Lagerfeld’s career as a fashion designer has spanned decades of work with companies as diverse as Chanel, Fendi, and H&M, it was while serving as the head of Chloé (1963-1983) that he created some of his most youthful, vibrant designs. Dresses like this draw inspiration from Art Deco, a European art movement characterized by stylized, geometric forms that were often inspired by Japanese aesthetics. The simplified floral design on the bodice is slightly raised from the surface of the fabric – much like the elaborate embroidery on formal kimono. This low-relief quilting, a technique called trapunto, pads small areas from inside the garment and adds dimension while leaving the flat plane of the fabric uninterrupted.
