Notes

Uchikake from the 1970s, exhibition text read: Uchikake, or outer kimono with thick padded hems, were often incorporated into kabuki theater performances where characters’ personalities were highlighted with strategic choices in clothing. As acting became more dramatic and costumes more elaborate, the government issued laws trying to limit the materials allowed for staging and dress. For example, when expensive patterned weaving was prohibited, designers sidestepped the law and used rich embroidery to embellish fabric. These innovations are still used in modern uchikake, where dense stitching creates large patterns and images that adorn entire garments. Though traditional Japanese garments are rarely worn today, uchikake are an important part of Japanese wedding ceremonies. Because they are so elaborate, entire wedding ensembles can cost as much as $10,000 to rent and several times more to purchase. This uchikake was most likely part of a rental ensemble before being donated to the Texas Fashion Collection.
