Notes

1963 hatlet by Bes-Ben from the TFC's holdings. Exhibition text read: Known as the “Mad Hatter of Chicago,” Benjamin Green-Field incorporated unconventional materials and explored wide-ranging themes in his millinery designs. In the 1940s, he created elaborate feathered parrots, lovebirds, and flamingoes to adorn outrageous toppers that brought a sense of delight to both wearers and observers. By the 1960s, the bird trims were representative rather than realistic, such as these stamped brass hummingbirds. The hummingbirds’ wings are articulated and flap up and down gaily as the wearer moves.

In the back, second prize winner "Queen Bee" hat by Karen Geraghty (British). Artist statement read: My favorite Bes-Ben headpieces have always been the bees and the crowns, so what could be better than combining them? I carved the beehive-shaped block from foam and used it to block the hand-dyed honey/straw coloured parisisal. The crown was woven from wire in a honeycomb pattern, painted gold, and stitched to the base. The woven straw bees were stitched on, and a final wired bee is taking flight. It's lined in a honeycomb print fabric.
