Description

Little Julia, resident of New York City, is taken to see her uncle's farm. Exposed to fields, animals, and the open spaces, she regrets having to return to the city. Back home, she wants to run away and return to her uncle's farm. Against her mother's orders, she does run away one day, but is found and brought home, and learns never to disobey her mother again.

    Publisher Info: The American Sunday School Union (ASSU) was founded in 1824 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. ItÂ’s purpose was promoting Sunday schools and their goals of educating children. The ASSU published vast numbers of items, and distributed countless books and periodicals through its Sunday schools and by selling them to others. It played an important role in shaping not only 19th century children's literature in America, but also the moral character of several generations.

Notes

Example of a mid-1800's juvenile moralizing literature. Intended as a "reward book" and typical of Sunday school literature, obedience to God and Earthly authority is stressed in these simple stories with woodcut illustrations. Most of the juveniles published by the American Sunday School Union were undated, and dates are based upon the address of the Union as it apears on the items. This piece has the address 1122 Chestnut Street on the cover, but 316 Chestnut on the title page. 316 was the address from 1853 to 1857, and it is likely that this was printed about 1857, but then released shortly thereafter with a cover printed with the new address.

Donated to the Weaver Collection of Juvenile Materials in honor of the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Rare Book & Texana Collections, January 2007.
