Summary: Interview with Charles V. Griffin, Jr. concerning his experiences as founder of Uvalde Producers Feed and Elevator, Inc. in Uvalde, Texas. Griffin discusses his family background, farming and education near Weslaco, Texas, his employment with Texas A&M Extension Service, his experiences during the Depression in College Station, Texas, his assignment as county agricultural agent for Jones and Brown Counties, and his employment with Quaker Oats Company developing feed in 1948. He also talks about the purchase of Uvalde Producers Wool-Mohair in 1952, the wool and mohair business, the split of the operation into feed/grain business and wool/mohair business, the merger with Dolph Briscoe's wool and mohair business, the sale of the wool and mohair business in 1970, and goat raising near Uvalde and the problems with predators. Griffin comments on the storage and sale of corn, milo, and wheat, the purchase of a grain elevator in Knippa, Texas, his son's management of the feed and grain business, his involvement in buying and selling grain, soybeans, and guar beans, the volume of sales in the feed and grain business, and the reasons for the decrease in grain sales. He shares his views on personnel and equipment requirements for a grain business, financing the company, John Nance Garner as a banker, the organizational structure of the company, the competition in the grain business, the credit business, farming in Batesville, Texas, his trade association and civic activities, and educational advice for students of business.
