Comment from John Cuellar: In 1964, John Wayne campaigned in Texas for Gordon McLendon, who ran against Ralph Yarborough in the Democratic primary for US Senate. The campaign button worn by Wayne refers to “the Old Scotchman,” which was Gordon McLendon’s nickname.
