Five-hundred tons of the ore itself is removed daily
to the nearby processing plant, which Sus u ana
Corporation built several years ago in anticipation
of the boom. Although uranium prospectors say Geiger
counters no longer are needed to discover deposits --
counters are used to check each load to determine the
quality of the ore before it leaves the mine.
* At the plant, the ore is crushed...whirled...and
pummelled into a fine granule; subjec ed to acids;
and finally fired in an oven to remove any residual
chemicals. Then, in its more or less pure form, the
uranium oxide is stored in 55-gallon drums for
shipment. Plant officials say they're now able to
recover as much as 95 percent of the actual uranium
from the raw ore. In terms of money,-- add this up.
The going price for uranium oxide is back up to
around six or seven dollars a pound.  Susquehana plans
