then I roam amiln with my brother
ami sister us in childhood's sunny
years lu tho garden of the old home-
stead orsjiort beneiUhtheshiideof the
tall trees in they throw their broad
branches protect iiitfly over the roof
which sheltered mo in early years.
TIs then that 1 bear again words of
admonition fulling from the lips of my
revered father who while
"Tliu mi'lliiw t'vu l gliding
HiTi'iii'ly iIdwii the w'l'si"
and the Sabbath bells are calling to
evening worship sits In the doorway
surrounded by his little household band.
Thus whilo held by the magic sway of
dreams I would become once more the
innocent happy child of other days
"Anil my soul It would soeni
Womanhood's yours have bucn nil it d renin."
Hut with returning day conies the
awakening the realization that I am
no longer iv child but it woman for
whom the past Is beyond recall; and I
I feci that only the present Is mine
while the future lures mo on witli
promises and hopes of nobler aspira-
tions and higher achievements. Vet
who will say dreams are not a bless-
lug? What a happy privilege to be
cuabled to return to those "halycou
days" when our tongues were merry
ami our hearts were light those happy
days that crowned us ere the sorrows
and cares of imilurer years hud bur-
dened our hearts and brought a sadder
cadence to our voice.
Itut not only in slumber do our
thoughts travel to distant scenes; often
have I wandered in "day dreams" to
the Old Worldto Italy the far-famed
land of tho arts and siences and stand-
ing in tliu Pantheon viewed the great
men of other days presented by the
muster hand of art have beheld pre-
sented in the marble statutes around
me Dante "tho immortal poet with
energetic countenance of nobly hitter
lineaments;" Michael Angelo Kaphae
Gallileo and many others of earth's
greatest artisU poets thinkers and
warriors. I have wandered along the
banks of tho waters of the blue Amu
where green trees stand in gay luxuri-
ance among tho elegant houses the
splendid churches and palaces of the
city of Florence where marble statues-
forms of beauty and pensive thought
with stone porticoes and bridges meet
the eye everywhere beneath tho clear
blue vault of heaven lint imagination
does not permit me to tarry long amid
these scones so fair to behold but leads
me on to ancient Home the center of
Italy and ere long I am surrounded by
columns triumphal arches temples and
palaces broken ruinous yet grand
and beautiful with a certain mourn-
ful solemn beauty Here too I see
the forum yhere the Gracchi those
first great tribunes of the people spoke
Jn stirring accents for the rights of the
people. Then my eyes rest upon the
ruins of the capitol where once the
eloquence of Cicero was heard falling
upon the ears of the Roman senate
and awakening in their hearts a pa-
triotic zeal for the true greatness of
Rome. Well might one love to linger
among scenes around which cluster so
man reminiscences of ancient Rome
as she was when she shone forth in her
pristiue glory mistress of the civilized
world but onward I am borne by the
train of imagination to the city of
Naples where I lielioia aiotini esu-
vius the giantof nature crowned with
its column of smoke sending forth
ever an nnon Its streams of burning
lava threatening at times to sub-
merge the fair city below. I feel
something resembling reverence and
dread as I gaze upon this mon-
arch of volcanoes and listen to
the dull thunder-like noise which
attimes sounds from his subterranean
realm. Yet ere I give expression to
my feelings my thoughts bound for-
ward to a scene more genial and bright
and suddenly beautilul Venice "tho
bride of the sea" bursts upon my
vision. 'Tisn lovely night In midsum-
mer and the light of tiie railiunt moon
beams upon temple and palace glit-
ters upon the waves of the canal upon
whose waters countless gondolas pass
gliding to and fro whilo the song of
the gondolier Is heard mingling with
tho soft notes of tho guitar orijursts or
rippling laughter from pleasure-
"Surely" I exclaim "uothing can
be more beautiful than a moonlight
night in Venice!" The lovely scene
seems to act as an inspiration for
even whilo I gaze entranced upn
It my thoughts soar higher
and higher on the wings of fancy until
the sight of the jasper walls and
pearly gates of the New Jerusalem
the Eternal City dawns upon my mor-
tal vision. I behold the great white
throne upon which the Omnipotent
sits in the majesty of heaven abd
from which the River of Life flows
