Description: Tin type image of Lewallen Conaway, who was born March 14, 1832 in Mississippi and died September 10, 1862, the son of James Sr. and Mary Conaway. He was a Private in Co. A of the 20th Texas Cavalry, CSA, during the War of the Rebellion and possibly died during the war. A search of known burials in Houston and Anderson Counties reveal no burial location for him. This photo was found among the papers of the Conaway family that were donated to the Palestine Public Library some years ago.

[James "Jim" Conaway]

Description: James "Jim" Conaway was born 18 August 1830 and died 11 October 1898 and was buried in the East Hill section of the Palestine city cemetery complex. He was the son of James Sr. and Mary Conaway and he never married. This photograph was found, along with a handwritten copy of his will, among the papers of the Conaway family that were donated to the Palestine Public Library some years ago.

Fulton, Johnston Shelton and William Bigelow were hired by the first Anderson County commissioners to survey the surrounding land and lay out a town site, consisting of a central courthouse square and the surrounding 24 blocks.
