Presbyterian Church of Mineral Wells

Written on the back of the photograph is: "Presbyterian Church & Manse N.W. 4th Ave. & [NW]2nd St. Built 1896, Burned 1908" This was the first Presbyterian Church of Mineral Wells. It was replaced, after it burned in 1908, at the same location the next year by a unique domed church that endured for some seventy years. Deterioration of the foundation of the second church building dictated its prudent replacement by a third building at this same location in the early 1980's.

[Letters of Rev. Dr. Thomas McHutchin Cunningham]

The Rev. Dr. Thomas McHutchin Cunningham (March 22, 1887 - March 3, 1979) wrote these letters to family members from April 14, 1918 to November 28, 1927. The letters detail his life as a minister in Texas and other locations. The letters are written from Stamford, Spur, Eliasville, Sherman, Gainesville, Orange, Boston (Mass.), Richmond (Va.), and Knoxville (Tn.). The letters detail church news, family life, and travel on the S.S. Leviaton in 1927 to visit London, Paris, and Jerusalem.

First Presbyterian Church in 1896

Handwritten notes on this old newspaper clipping indicate that it was given by M. J. Graham to A. F. Weaver, and correctly reports that the church structure burned August 25, 1908. The article erroneously states that it burned July 4, 1914. The article appears to have been published in the Mineral Wells Index. Shown here is a picture of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. On the back of picture is written "901 N.Oak [.] Sold to Church of Christ [.] Demolished and rebuilt." The streetcar tracks, which ran from 1907 to 1913 are visible on N. Oak in front of the church. The denomination takes its name from Cumberland Street, Philadelphia.
