Denton County Courthouse, 1876 to 1894

Description: The first Denton County Courthouse was believed to have been burned in an act of arson in 1875. The second County Courthouse was built in 1876 and lasted until 1894 when lightning struck it. A photograph of the second courthouse included.

Burial of John B. Denton

Description: Group of individuals on the Denton Square for the burial of John B. Denton on the lawn of the Denton County Courthouse. The pallbearers are E. B. Orr, L. Willis, J. M. Swisher, John W. Gober, J.H. Hawkins, and W. C. Wright. The Minnis and Curtis Drugstore can be seen in the southeast corner of the square. The Exchange National Bank can be seen in the background. This photo was given to the Library by Bess Minnis McFadden, according to a Denton Record-Chronicle article from July 2, 1967.

Burial of John B. Denton

Description: Burial of John B. Denton on the lawn of the Denton County Courthouse. The pall bearers were John W. Gober, E. B. Orr, L. Willis, J. M. Swisher, J. H. Hawkins, W. C. Wright. Rev. J. T. Denton, one of John B. Denton's sons, was in charge of the services. Son John B. Denton, Jr. and grandson Wiliam Baker were also present.

Description: A view of the business section on the north side of the Denton Square around 1889. All the buildings were constructed of wood, with board sidewalks of even lengths to aid the pedestrian in keeping out of the mud and sand of the unpaved streets. Description: Dr. Livelong's medicine show arrived by a donkey-pulled wagon on the courthouse square. Homer B. Bronstad of Denton High School was Dr. Livelonger. In the photograph, the ABC Belles are presenting their "Over the Top Tonic", made by Strong and Robust. It was "Guaranteed to cure all Centennial aches and pains." Mrs. Sy Lockhart, president of the Belles, presented comedy lines. The article for this event appeared in the April 5th, 1957 Denton Record-Chronicle on page 5.
