Description: Narration by Junebug Clark: This photo is from the 1940s in Cumberland Gap, Tennessee. Old Mag is a mule. My grandfather, Wade Hampton Clark, Sr. kept him on his farm. I never met Old Mag, but my father, Joe Clark, HBSS was attached to him. This photo has appeared in magazines, posters and in one of my dad's book.

Description: Photograph of brothers Ullmann and Joseph Kilgore sitting together, wearing their military uniforms. Joseph, the brother on the right, was a lieutenant in the U.S. Army and an officer in the 43rd Infantry Division in New Guinea. Ullmann, the brother on the left, was part of the U.S. Navy's 24th Seabee Battalion. Having just finished a successful campaign in New Guinea, Joseph's division had been ordered to rest in New Zealand, where Ullmann's battalion were also ordered to go.

Description: A letter written to Uncle Norwood [T. N. Carswell] from Martha Virginia Carswell, Homerville, Georgia, dated August 8, 1944. Martha Carswell advises that she has decided to go into the U. S. Nursing Corps and asks if he thinks it a wise thing to do. She advises that her mother wants for her to do so but that her father does not and that he has always treated her mother, herself and all of the children "terrible".
