Rusty L-shaped carpenter's square with the vertical part longer and wider than the horizontal part. The square is marked off in inches: outer edge, 24 in. horizontally and 16 in. vertically. The inside is marked 22.5 in. horizontally and 14 in. vertically. Straight down the middle of the longer part it is marked starting at 1 ending with 21in. [Monkey Wrench]

Starting at the bottom, the handle of the monkey wrench is a flat oval shape with two holes, it probably had two wooden pieces, one on each side attached with screws or nails. The neck has a vice that extends all the way to the head to the top of the handle. The head is rectangular with a sloping side. The back of the head is square and looks as though it was used as hammer.

Hand saw with a carved wooden handle and steel blade. Handle has a carved leaf pattern on one side with three brass bolts: top two are 1.2 cm in diameter and have no surface decoration, bottom bolt is 2.2 cm in diameter and is stamped with an eagle and with "Warranted / Pat. Dec. 27, 1887 / Superior"

Compass saw that has an upside down G-Shaped handle with two screwed where the blade inserts. The one further away from the blade is 2 cm in diameter and is stamped with H Disston & Sons Philada With a little emblem in the center. The other is 1.2 cm in diameter and is plain. The blade is most likely the original because it has been engraved with the same names.

Combination tool that has a flat head with five sharp tines that have been inserted into the head. The neck has been inserted into the head and handle. The handle is wooden and shaped like a cylinder with rounded ends.

[Chest of tools possibly belonging to Anton B. Wessendorff]

It is believed that this chest and tools belonged to Anton B. Wessendorff, a cabinet maker who came to America from Germany about 1850 when he was about 20 yrs old. He started a small cabinet shop in Richmond about 1855 adding a small line of lumber and nails as demand developed. He also began making and finishing caskets.
