[Colonel George R. Howard]

Description: Colonel George Robert Howard was born on June 6, 1818. He married Cornelia Cox and they came to Palestine from Tennessee in 1849. Given the title of Colonel when he organized a company of men during the Civil War, he later served in the Texas Legislature, held several county offices and was Mayor of Palestine from 1886-1887. [Parents and Children at First Midland School]

Description: Photograph of parents and children at the first school in Midland, possibly around 1886. The building, a lumber house with a front porch located on N. Big Spring Street near Illinois Avenue, was rebuilt in 1887. Several names are listed on the back of the picture: Clarence Scharbauer, Mary McEntire Vest (Mollie), Doc K.
