Partially Annotated Bibliography of Purse Seines and Their Effect on Targeted Fishery Stocks

Description: Abstract: Available literature concerning purse seine fisheries was reviewed. Literature was selected for this report if 1) it presented information that provided insight into the history and long-term trends in a fishery and 2) it presented information on purse seines unique to a fishery. Information found in the reviewed literature revealed that purse seines are a highly efficient fishing gear and without adequate regulation are potentially damaging to targeted fish populations.

Description: Report detailing the interviews conducting in 1985 with commercial fishermen and Indochinese seafood dealers to determine the impact on Texas commercial fisheries. Fish Stocking in Texas Bays: 1975-1989

Description: Abstract: In 1989, 82,139,452 red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) fry and fingerlings were stocked into Texas bays. Matagorda and East Matagorda Bay received 74,313 fry and fingerling spotted seatrout (Cynoscion nebulosus). Galveston Bay received 5,049,000 striped bass (Morone saxatilis) fry and 349,240 fingerlings.

Induced Spawning of Eastern Oysters

Description: Abstract: Eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) were collected from South Bay, Texas and induced to spawn in the laboratory. These oysters were conditioned for 12 weeks on continuous flow using Matagorda Bay water. Spawning procedures used resulted in approximately two million larvae. Results indicate that Eastern oysters from South Bay, Texas can be successfully spawned in the laboratory using established procedures.

Shrinkage of Spotted Seatrout Held in Ice

Description: Report documenting the results of a study on the amount of shrinkage when spotted sea trout are stored on ice. The study found the shrinkage averaged 3 millimeters after a 24 hour period and was insignificant in enforcement of minimum size limits in recreational fishing.
