It is postmarked Kansas City, Missouri August 17, 1917, and the date Aug 28 is also stamped on the front. The return address is written on the back, along with some other handwritten notes. The right edge of the envelope has been torn.

Beginning in December, he served in the fire room aboard USS Enterprise (CV-6). In April of 1942, they escorted USS Hornet (CV-8) on the Doolittle Raid.
