"This map is carefully compiled from source material known to be reliable and authentic. The authors have at all times striven for accuracy not only in locating the geographical features of the map but also in the choice of the historical material used. The stories shown on the map have been carefully chosen not only for their historical value but for their human interest and local color as well and cover a period extending from the landing of Cabeza de Vaca on Galveston Island in 1528 to the Big Storm at the same place in 1900. The authors have been very careful to faithfully portray the dress and atmosphere of the period and the situations as revealed in the stories being illustrated."

"Flats maps and historical data accumulated over a period of 25 years have gone into the construction of this map. We trust that the reader will derive as much pleasure from perusing this map as the authors have had in compiling it. Bill Hoffman, Bill Walker."

"Many of the points of historical interest shown on this map were visited by the authors and portions of some of the old trails such as the Comanche Indian trail, Chihuahua trail, Butterfield Overland Mail Route and Marcey's Return Route or the California trail were accurately plotted from the field notes of original surveys. Numerous volumes of histories, biographical sketches, personal reminiscence and many county histories were scanned in the process of compiling this map."

"In addition to these maps the following material was used: Numerous maps and plats accompanying surveyors reports on file in the Texas General Land Office; U.P.G.S. Quadrangle sheets; Texas General Land Office County Survey maps; County highway maps prepared by the Texas Highway Department; Aerial Photographs; U.S. Army Topographical Engineers reconnaissance maps; Military map of the Rio Grande Frontier by Capt. W.R. Livermore 1881 and carried in the field by Col. B.H. Grierson 10th U.S. Cav. Map of a portion of Texas, New Mexico and Indian Territory including the Staked Plains or Llano Estacado, showing trails of the expeditions commanded by Col. R.S. Mackensie 4th U.S. Cav., Col. Nelson Miles 5th U.S. Inf. and Lt. Col. J.W. Davidson 10th U.S. Cav. prepared under the direction of Maj.G.L. Gillespie Corps of Engineers U.S. Army. 1875."

"The towns and roads reflect conditions as they existed in Texas in the eighteen fifties and were taken from maps considered to be the most accurate and reliable of their time such as Pressler's map of Texas 1858 and Richardson's new map of Texas expressly engraved for the Texas Almanac 1859. The outline of the state and the drainage is taken from the Department of the Interior U.P. Geological Survey map of Texas. The hachures denoting elevation accurately follow the contour lines shown on the U.P.G.S. topographical map of Texas and are shown on this map on 500 ft. contour intervals."
