Description

Photograph of gymnast, Clara Seymore, performing a back walkover on a balance beam. The text on the photograph tells us that the sequence was shot at eight frames per second. Narrative by Junebug Clark: Farmington High School, Michigan, gymnastics team. Clara was a teammate of my daughter Anna. These photos were made during a competition. I started shooting practices and competitions to home my skills with 1. a new camera, 2.Kodak ASA 3200 TMZ film, 3.Scanning film, 4.Using Photoshop to workup images, 5.Outputting digital files to an Epson printer. In return I would bring a board full of mostly 5x7 Silver prints to every week thinking the girls would be thrilled to see themselves and the parents horrified to see exactly how dangerous some of these routines could be. Instead the girls would immediately critique their performance. "Just look how your toes are pointed." Or, "You need more height not distance." Wow, the photos were coaching tools. The boards were left in the halls and entryway to the gymnasium and when home meets and regional competitions were held, I actually thing it helped psych out competitors by seeing what they were up against.
